Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." Matt.
19:14
Our outline serves as the track for our program to
run
on. We start our year by posting a sign-up sheet in
February with various categories for people to check off any areas they
would like to help out with. Once people have signed up and
the
VBS director has started to position people; the outline is given to
those writing lessons, teaching crafts, doing music, decorating,
running games, making snacks, etc. We let people in
charge
of these categories have fun and use their gifts and
creativity
to come up with selections to teach the theme of each
day.
When people are encouraged to use their talents and make decisions in
their area of service, they seem to throw themselves into it
more. Some people need more direction than others,
so
that’s the job of the director - always trying to encourage people to
develop their talents within the boundaries of the
outline.
For example, we have people that are very artistic and head up creating
large banners for the sanctuary. They make a banner
for
every day of the VBS week with the theme for each day on
it. They use the rest of the outline to help them
know how
to decorate each individual banner appropriately.
The
banners help decorate the church, help our MC to be able to review each
day with the children, let parents see what we’re learning, remind the
kids of what they’ve learned and give them a glimpse of what’s still
ahead. The woman who heads these up, also teaches
the
children’s class during our mid-week Bible study, so she involves the
church kids in making the banners. She is very
creative and
we have had all sorts of things hanging from the ceiling- from
suitcases to horses to “barbed wire” fences made from swimming pool
noodles to bees and wanted posters.
The
outline is our way of encouraging people to use their talents and come
up with great ideas while keeping it unified for the clear proclamation
of the Gospel and the good of the children. VBS has
given
our teens and adults the chance to work together in proclaiming the
good news of Jesus Christ. So if you choose to try
our
programs, use the outline to see what your unique group of believers
can do to reach the children in your own special community for Christ.
